Farflung Infinite's world map, country list, land borders, regions and population figures all come from Natural Earth, a free public-domain map dataset. Prompts are generated by our own code from that data plus short geography fact lists we compile and check against cited references. Nothing is copied from the official Farflung game.
What data does the game use?
| Data | Source | Licence |
|---|---|---|
| Country shapes for the map (1:50m) | Natural Earth Admin 0 Countries | Public domain |
| Land borders between countries | Computed by our build script from Natural Earth 1:10m country shapes | Public domain input |
| Continents and regions | Natural Earth's continent and UN geoscheme (M49) subregion fields | Public domain |
| Population estimates (used for prompts and rarity) | Natural Earth POP_EST field | Public domain |
| Capital names (fact cards) | Natural Earth Populated Places | Public domain |
| Languages, coastlines, rivers, mountain ranges, lines on the globe, currencies, Olympic hosts, landlocked countries | Short fact lists compiled by the Farflung Infinite team; each list is checked against the reference in the table below | Our own lists; references are Wikipedia (CC BY-SA) |

Which reference is each fact list checked against?
Every hand-written list was checked against the article below on November 1, 2026. Notes explain countries that are left out on purpose.
| Fact list | Countries | Checked against | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A country with a coastline on the Black Sea | 6 | Black Sea (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a shore on the Caspian Sea | 5 | Caspian Sea (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a coastline on the Baltic Sea | 9 | Baltic Sea (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a coastline on the Red Sea | 8 | Red Sea (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a coastline on the Persian Gulf | 8 | Persian Gulf (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea | 22 | Mediterranean Sea (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with a coastline on the Caribbean Sea | 20 | Caribbean Sea (Wikipedia) | Barbados and the Bahamas are Caribbean countries but their coasts face the open Atlantic, so they are not accepted. |
| A country the Danube flows through or along | 10 | Danube (Wikipedia) | |
| A country the Rhine flows through or along | 6 | Rhine (Wikipedia) | |
| A country the Mekong flows through or along | 6 | Mekong (Wikipedia) | |
| A country the Amazon River flows through | 3 | Amazon River (Wikipedia) | |

| A country the Andes run through | 7 | Andes (Wikipedia) | |
| A country with part of the Himalayas | 5 | Himalayas (Wikipedia) | |
| A country the Equator crosses on land | 11 | Equator (Wikipedia) | The Equator also crosses the territorial waters of the Maldives and Kiribati, but no land there, so they are not accepted. |
| A country the Tropic of Cancer passes through | 15 | Tropic of Cancer (Wikipedia) | It also crosses Taiwan and Western Sahara, which are not in this game's country list. |
| A country the Tropic of Capricorn passes through | 10 | Tropic of Capricorn (Wikipedia) | |

| A country where French is an official language | 26 | List of countries and territories where French is an official language (Wikipedia) | Mali (2023), Burkina Faso (2024) and Niger (2025) changed their constitutions so French is no longer an official language there, so they are not accepted. |
| A country where Arabic is an official language | 23 | List of countries and territories where Arabic is an official language (Wikipedia) | Israel gives Arabic a special status rather than official status, and Eritrea has no official language, so neither is accepted. |
| A country where Dutch is an official language | 3 | Dutch language (Wikipedia) | |
| A country where Russian is an official language | 4 | List of countries and territories where Russian is an official language (Wikipedia) | Tajikistan calls Russian a language of interethnic communication, not an official language. |

| Landlocked countries (by continent) | 44 | Landlocked country (Wikipedia) | Countries on the Caspian Sea count as landlocked. |
Which land borders were corrected by hand?
Borders are computed with zero tolerance: two countries count as neighbours only if their Natural Earth 1:10m outlines share a stretch of border, not just a single point. These corrections are applied on top:
| Countries | Change | Why | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Namibia – Zimbabwe | Removed | Namibia and Zimbabwe share no border; at Kazungula they come within about 150 m of each other. | Kazungula (Wikipedia) |
| Botswana – Zambia | Added | Botswana and Zambia share a border of about 150 m on the Zambezi at Kazungula (Natural Earth draws it as a single point). | Botswana–Zambia border (Wikipedia) |
| Somalia – Djibouti | Added | Somalia borders Djibouti de jure; Natural Earth draws Somaliland as a separate unit between them. | Somalia (Wikipedia) |
Spain and Morocco count as neighbours through the land borders of the Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla in North Africa. Spain also borders the British territory of Gibraltar, which isn't a country in this game.
How are prompts made?
Our code turns the data into prompt families: land borders, regions, landlocked countries, countries with no land border, neighbour counts, coastlines, rivers, mountains, lines on the globe, official languages, the euro, Summer Olympic hosts, population bands and country-name puzzles. A prompt is kept only if it has between 3 and 30 accepted countries. Daily Infinite rounds are drawn from this bank with a seed based on the date; Infinite rounds are drawn at random.
How is rarity decided?
For each prompt we rank the accepted countries by Natural Earth's population estimate. The most populous quarter are Common, then Uncommon, Rare and Very Rare, and the least populous accepted country is always the Outlier. Prompts with five or fewer accepted countries skip the Very Rare tier, so not every prompt uses all five tiers. It's a simple stand-in for "how many people would think of this", and it's our own method, not the official game's.
Which countries are in the game?
195: the 193 United Nations member states plus Vatican City and Palestine. Other areas, including dependent territories, Taiwan, Kosovo and Western Sahara, are drawn in grey and aren't part of the answer lists. Borders and names follow Natural Earth's default view, which doesn't imply any position on disputed territory.
